logo_e.gif (3930 bytes)

The Pokemon trading card game was born on Nintendo's handheld game consoles, and come this May, that's where it's returning. Nintendo and Wizards of the Coast are slated to release the first series of digitally enhanced Pokemon e-Cards.

Pokemon e-Cards look exactly like regular Pokemon cards. They can be included in games using the original cards, but they have a small, encrypted stripe on one side that slides through the e-Card reader (also available in May), much in the same way you'd slide a credit card through a credit card machine. The e-Card reader slips into the cartridge slot of your Game Boy Advance.

When you swipe the e-Card through the reader a few things will happen. Sound effects specific to that card will start playing over the Game Boy Advance speakers, graphics will appear on the screen, and data will be saved to the GBA for whatever Pokemon card you're scanning -- effectively transforming the GBA into a Pokedex.

Some cards will feature minigames and other cards will reveal hidden Pokemon. After the first release of the e-Cards, all new Pokemon cards will be compatible with the GBA and the e-Card reader.
